What is matcha?
Matcha is a green powder, traditionally made from ground green tea leaves from Japan. In the land of the rising sun, preparing matcha is a ritual, a ceremony to which special attention and care are given.
Equipment
Preparing matcha tea like in Japan requires very specific equipment:
-
The Chashaku: it is the spoon to measure the matcha. It is long, has a distinctive shape and is made of bamboo.
- The Chasen: which is the whisk used to whip the matcha powder with the water . Also made of bamboo, it is essential for preparing matcha tea in the traditional way, and it allows all the flavor of the plant to be released in this sacred ritual that is the preparation of matcha tea!
If you don't have the equipment yet, don't panic! Discover our Matcha Kit containing Chasen, Chashaku and matcha powder.
How to prepare matcha tea?
To prepare a matcha tea as it should, you must prepare your equipment: the Chashaku, the Chasen and a cup or a bowl large enough to be able to whisk the matcha properly without overflowing.
Matcha powder … Water… Everything ready? Perfect ! Here are the steps to follow:
Step 1: Heat the water. The water should be hot for the best taste of the matcha, but not hot to avoid the bitter taste. A temperature between 70 and 80 degrees is perfect.
Step 2: Take 1-2 scoops of matcha using the Chashaku and pour them into the bowl. This is equivalent to putting the equivalent of 1 to 2 teaspoons of matcha tea in the bowl.
Step 3: Pour about 70ml of hot water over your powdered green tea in the bowl. Since matcha tea is in powder form and not in leaves, it should not be infused, but rather whisked.
Step 4: Whisk. Whisk. Whip! Whisking a matcha tea takes about 15 seconds. With one hand, hold your bowl and with the other use your Chasen. The movement should be in a W shape and should be done vigorously until the liquid becomes smooth and foam appears. Quite an art!
And There you go ! Your sparkling matcha tea is ready and all you have to do is enjoy it quietly and enjoy its flavor.
